Josef Wagner - Baritone/Bass

Biography

Josef Wagner was born in Austria and studied at the Universität für Musik und darstellende Kunst in Vienna with Kurt Equiluz and Robert Holl, in master classes with Paul Esswood, Walter Bery and Christa Ludwig and currently with Wicus Slabbert.

He made his stage debut with Don Alfonso (Cosi fan tutte) and Dulcamara (L'Elisir d'amore). From 2002 to 2005, he was a soloist at the Wiener Volksoper, performing parts such as Publio (La Clemenza di Tito), Masetto (Don Giovanni), Alidoro (Cenerentola), Colline (La Bohème) and Philebos (Der König Kandaules). He has also sung Figaro (Le Nozze di Figaro) at the Salzburg Opera, Guglielmo (Cosi fan tutte) at the Festival "Mozart in Reinsberg", Lord Sidney (Il Viaggio a Reims) and Fra Melitone (La Forza del Destino) at the Bern Opera.

During the summer 2006, he made his debut at the Salzburg Festival with Don Cassandro (La Finta semplice) an then sang Figaro (Le Nozze di Figaro) at the Wiener Volksoper and on a concert tour with Het Gelders Orkest, Nachtigall (Meistersinger) at the Geneva Opera, Guglielmo at the Opera Ireland and Papageno (Die Zauberflöte) at Hyogo Performing Arts Center in Japan.

Season 2007/2008 included Herkules (Alceste by Anton Schweitzer) with the Concerto Köln under the baton of Michael Hofstetter, Lord Sidney (Il Viaggio a Reims) at the Israeli Opera and Nick Shadow (The Rake’s Progress) at the Opéra de Nantes and Don Giovanni (title-role) on concert tour in Holland with Het Gelders Orchestra. Further plans include Frank (Die Fledermaus) at the Geneva Opera, Don Alfonso and Ercole/Giove in Cavalli's Giasone at the Vlaamse Opera, Escamillo (Carmen) at the Israeli Opera and with the Bavarian Radio Orchestra, Ferrando (Il Trovatore) at the Ludwigsburger Schlossfestspiele, Malatesta (Don Pasquale) at the Israeli Opera, Leporello (Don Giovanni) at the Marseille Opera and Eduard (Neues vom Tage by Hindemith) at Dijon Opera.

Josef Wagner is a well demanded concert singer. He has appeared under the baton of Ton Koopman, Dennis Russel Davies, Nikolaus Harnoncourt at Wiener Musikverein and Wiener Konzerthaus. Projects include Frank Martin’s La Tempête at the Concertgebouw Amsterdam, Die Schöpfung and The Messiah with the Symphonic Orchestra of the Vlaamse Opera.
