Guy Joosten - Director
Biography
The Fleming Guy Joosten started his career as the director of a theatre company in Antwerp where he realized numerous plays, e.g. by William Shakespeare, Maxim Gorki, Lars Norén, Peter Handke and John Hopkins. He worked as a free lance stage director in Brussels, Amsterdam and Ghent. In 1991, he debuted at the Burgtheater Wien with Norén’s Nacht, Mutter des Tages. 1992-94, chief stage director at Thalia Theater Hamburg.
In 1991, he staged his first opera production in Antwerp, Rossini’s La Cenerentola, followed by Verdi’s Un ballo in maschera in Brussels and Madrid. For further productions he was invited to Vienna (Volksoper, Klangbogen Festival), Essen, Leipzig, Liège, Antwerp/Ghent, Brussels, London (ENO), Amsterdam, Geneva, Gothenburg, Copenhagen and Helsinki.
The title „Cultural Ambassador of Flanders“ was awarded to Guy Joosten for his work in the opera field. He was visiting professor at the University of Hamburg, at the Academy in Maastricht and at the theatre studio in Amsterdam. He is also teaching at the Royal Conservatory in Antwerp (opera class) and at the Theatre Institute in Barcelona. He was the founder and artistic director of the Flanders Opera Studio.
In 2005, Guy Joosten debuted at the Metropolitan Opera New York (Roméo et Juliette) and worked at the opera houses of Amsterdam, Berne, Hamburg, Leipzig, Maribor, Marseille, Montpellier, Monaco and Rouen. Recent productions are Wozzeck in Antwerp, Elektra and Salome in Barcelona, Lucia di Lammermoor and Elektra in Brussels, Frau ohne Schatten in Düsseldorf, Pelléas et Mélisande in Copenhagen, Aida in Hamburg.
Future projects include: Salome and Lucrezia Borgia in Brussels, Rumour (world permiere by Christian Jost) in Antwerp, La Wally in St. Gallen.
