Nicolas Brieger - Director

Biography

A native of Berlin, Nicolas Brieger first made a name for himself as an actor, in movies and television productions as well.

His theatrical career includes the whole German speaking area: From Berlin, Basel, Bremen, Bochum, Frankfurt, Hamburg, Mannheim - where he was director for the drama at the Nationaltheater from 1988 to 1992 - through Munich, Stuttgart, Burgtheater Wien and the Vienna Festival. He was the producer of dramas written by the world literature's most famous authors, from Euripides to Thomas Bernhard.

Amongst his opera productions should be mentioned: *Der Rosenkavalier, Busoni's Brautwahl and the world premiere of Elliot Carter's What next? * at the Berlin State Opera; Il Barbiere di Siviglia in Brussels; Katja Kabanova and The bartered bride in Leipzig; Turandot, Prokofiev's Love for the three oranges and Trovatore in Stuttgart; Elektra and Jenufa in Essen; Henze's Boulevard Solitude und Das verratene Meer, Hindemith's Cardillac and Wolfgang Rihm's Die Eroberung von Mexico in Frankfurt; Simon Boccanegra at Opera-Bastille in Paris; La clemenza di Tito, Menotti's Konsul and Idomeneo in Vienna; The marriage of Figaro and Zemlinsky’s Zwerg in Mannheim; Lady Macbeth of Mzensk, The turn of the screw, Galileo by Michael Jarrell , Der Cornet by Frank Martin, Mémoires d’une jeune fille triste by Xavier Dayer and Korngold’s Die tote Stadt at Geneva Opera; St-François d’Assise in San Francisco; Weill’s Royal Palace/Der Protagonist at the Bregenz Festival as well as Otello at Opera Hannover.

His recent projects included Don Giovanni in Mannheim, Lady Macbeth of Mzensk in Geneva, Il Giustino at the Festival of Schwetzingen, Doktor Faust (Busoni) at Bavarian State Opera Munich and The Greek Passion at Opera Zurich.

Future engagements are Der Schein trügt by Thomas Bernhard at Vienna Burgtheater and Salome at Grand Théâtre de Genève.
