Biography
Sven-Eric Bechtolf (a native of Darmstadt) made his studies at the Mozarteum Salzburg. Later he performed as an actor at renowned theatres like Schauspielhaus Zürich, Schauspielhaus Bochum and Thalia-Theater Hamburg, where he also worked for the direction and since 1994 repeatedly as a producer.
Between 1999 and 2006, he was a firm member of the Burgtheater Vienna and regularly performed at the Salzburg Festival. In 2007, he participated in Jedermann in the double role of Guter Gesell/Teufel. His repertoire includes roles from Othello, Robespierre, Arturo Ui, Leonce to Karl Moor. Further appearances brought him to the Almeida Theatre London. In 2001 and 2002, he received the “Nestroy” Award for the best actor of the year.
To work as an opera producer is another important centre of his artistic activities. He produced Les Contes d’Hoffmann at Deutsche Oper Berlin and Arabella at Vienna State Opera. This latter production will be revived at Hamburg State Opera in 2008.
At Opernhaus Zürich he produced Lulu, Otello, Die Tote Stadt, Pelléas et Mélisande, Rosenkavalier and a successful Mozart/Da Ponte cycle with Don Giovanni (2006) and Nozze di Figaro (2007). The cycle will be concluded with Così fan tutte in 2009.
2007/08 and 2009/10 he produces the new Ring cycle at Vienna State Opera. In 2007 was also published his literary debut with Vorabend.
On DVD, the following opera productions are available: Lulu, Pelléas et Mélisande, Der Rosenkavalier und Don Giovanni.
