Biography

A native of Cologne, Uwe Eric Laufenberg took theatre science at the University there, and then continued his studies at the Folkwang Academy of Music and Performing Arts in Essen. His first engagement brought him to the Staatsschauspiel Darmstadt and as an actor and assistant to the Schauspiel Frankfurt where he gave his debut as director with Harald Kuhlmann’s piece Pfingstläuten.

Further productions in Frankfurt: Krieg by Rainald Goetz, Krankheit der Jugend/Die Gerechten by Arnold Bronnen and Albert Camus, Rückkehr in die Wüste by Bernard Marie Koltes. From 1990 to 1993 he directed among others the following pieces at Schauspiel Cologne: Merlin by Tankred Dorst, Der Besuch der alten Dame by Friedrich Dürrenmatt and with an outstanding success Clavigo by Johann Wolfgang von Goethe. From 1993 to 1996, Mr. Laufenberg was director and Oberspielleiter at Schauspielhaus Zurich where he staged among others Die Räuber by Friedrich Schiller, Dantons Tod by Georg Büchner and Hamlet by William Shakespeare.

From 1997 to 2000, he was director and board member of the Maxim Gorki Theater Berlin (Berlin Alexanderplatz by Döblin).

Since 2003, Uwe Eric Laufenberg is artistic director of the Hans-Otto-Theater in Potsdam.

Since 1992, Mr. Laufenberg directs as well music theatre at international opera houses, f.e. Ariadne auf Naxos in Brussles, Der Rosenkavalier at Semperoper Dresden, Die verkaufte Braut at Volksoper Wien and Tosca in Geneva. In summer 2008, his production of Ernst Krenek’s Karl V. will be shown at Bregenz Festival.

From season 2009/10, Uwe Eric Laufenberg has been nominated Intendant of the Oper Cologne.
