Biography
Julia Juon is one of the dramatic mezzosopranos most in demand today. After her opera debut in St. Gallen/Switzerland, she was engaged to Karlsruhe and Kassel, where she was in a position to work intensively on her repertoire as a Wagner singer (Fricka, Waltraute, Kundry, Ortrud and Venus). She sang her first Brangäne at Saarbrücken and was regularly interpreting this part in the famous Ruth Berghaus production of Tristan und Isolde at Hamburg State Opera, where she also sang Amme/Die Frau ohne Schatten and Waltraute/Götterdämmerung in Günter Krämer’s Ring production, conducted by Gerd Albrecht. Her interpretation of Gräfin Geschwitz in Berg’s Lulu in Copenhagen attracted great attention. This production was recorded by Chandos and is available on CD. She also appeared as Geschwitz at Opéra Bastille in Paris where she returned to as a triumphantly acclaimed Kundry (opposite Placido Domingo).
Other highlights were her Kundry at Semperoper Dresden; Schreker’s Der ferne Klang in Jürgen Flimm’s production at Vienna State Opera; Baba the Turk/The Rake’s Progress and Countess/Pique Dame in Hamburg; Ortrud/Lohengrin in Bonn and Oslo; a concert version of Der ferne Klang with Gerd Albrecht at Berliner Philharmonie, including CD; Iocaste/Oedipus Rex at Opéra Montpellier, Herodias/Salome in Bologna, Trieste, Dublin, Leipzig, Wiesbaden and at Opéra de Montpellier, Amme/Die Frau ohne Schatten in Frankfurt, Madrid, Metropolitan Opera New York, Barcelona and Helsinki, Brigitta/Die tote Stadt and Mary/Der fliegende Holländer at Gran Teatre del Liceu in Barcelona, debut as Kostelnicka/Jenufa at Komische Oper Berlin and as Magdalone/Maskarade at the Bregenz Festival, Amme/Ariane et Barbe-Bleue at Bastille Paris, Principessa/Suor Angelica at Frankfurt Opera and Roslia/Tiefland in Barcelona.
Julia Juon also appeared in Essen, Berlin/Deutsche Oper, Nuremberg, Milan/La Scala, Buenos Aires and Santiago de Chile. In Switzerland, her native country, she sang in St. Gallen, Berne, Basel and Zürich and she is well known as a concert and lied interpreter.
