Biography
The soprano Catherine Naglestad has distinguished herself on the international opera stage not only with her versatility but also with her eminent acting ability. A Californian with Scandinavian parents, she completed her voice education at the Conservatory in San Francisco, going to Rome and New York for further training.
Today her repertoire ranges from Barock to Verismo and includes parts like Bellini’s Norma, Gluck’s Alceste, Handel’s Alcina, Rodelinda and Melissa („Amadigi“), Leoncavallo’s Nedda, Monteverdi’s Poppea, Mozart’s Vitellia, Donna Elvira, Fiordiligi und Konstanze, Verdi’s Amelia („Ballo in maschera“), Violetta, Aida, Elisabetta, Leonora („Trovatore“), Puccini’s Musetta, Manon Lescuat, Liù and Tosca, Weill’s Dejanira („Royal Palace“) and Catherine („The Protagonist“), the Duchess of Parma in Busoni’s „Doctor Faust“ and Strauss’ Salome.
„La Clemenza di Tito“ in Paris and „Alceste“, „Alcina“ and „Die Entführung aus dem Serail“ in Stuttgart were recorded for television and are available on DVD.
In 2006 Catherine Naglestad was named Kammersängerin for her exceptional achievements by the German Ministry of Culture. In the same year, she was chosen singer of the year in the critics’ poll of the magazine “Opernwelt” for her vivid role portrayals. In 2008 she received from the Dallas Opera the Maria Callas Debut Artist of the Year Award for her interpretation of Tosca, a part which she also sang with great success in London, Paris, Bordeaux, Marseille, Baden-Baden, Berlin, Stuttgart, Bregenz and Vienna.
Some of the festivals where Catherine Naglestad has been a guest performer are Baden-Baden, Bregenz, Salzburg, Edinburgh, Dresden and Munich, at the Ruhr-Triennale, at the Budapest Spring Festival, the Hong Kong Arts Festival and the Osaka Festival. With the NHK Symphony Orchestra she gave concerts, which were broadcast live from Suntory Hall in Tokyo. Other opera engagements have taken her to London (Covent Garden), Dallas, San Francisco, Bordaux, Paris (Opéra Bastille and Palais Garnier), Lyon, Marseille, Berlin (State Opera and Deutsche Oper), Cologne, Stuttgart, Dusseldorf, Frankfurt, Hamburg and Vienna.
Among the current projects are Tosca at the Vienna and at the Berlin State Operas, in Munich, Orange, Toulouse and Zurich, Sieglinde in Amsterdam, Salome in Vienna, Leonora in Antwerp, Brünnhilde („Siegfried“) in Munich and Madame Butterfly in Washington.
