Jane Archibald - Soprano
Biography
Jane Archibald was born in Nova Scotia, Canada. She studied voice at Wilfrid Laurier University, the Orford Arts Centre and the Tanglewood Music Center. In 2004 she began a rewarding affiliation with the San Francisco Opera as a participant in the selective Merola program, which subsequently led to a prestigious two-year tenure as an Adler Fellow under the auspices of the San Francisco Opera Center.
Handelian fireworks were the order of the day in 2003 when the coloratura soprano undertook the role of Poppea in Handel's Agrippina for her U.S. debut with Chicago Opera Theater. She subsequently performed Lakmé (title role) for Opera Ontario, Susanna (Le Nozze di Figaro) again for Chicago Opera Theater, as well as Ibert's Angélique (title role), Donizetti's Rita (title role), Pasatieri's The Seagull (Masha) and Pergolesi's La Serva Padrona (Serpina) for the San Francisco Opera Center.
2005 marked the beginning of her European career with her performance of Konstanze in Mozart's Die Entführung aus dem Serail for Festival d'Antibes. It was followed by a triumphant Spanish concert debut with the Ensemble Matheus, learning and performing the role of Costanza in Vivaldi's La Griselda on a few days' notice.
Highlights in 2005/06 were her San Francisco Opera debut as Elvira in L'Italiana in Algeri as well as performances of Handel's Alcina (title role) for Opera de Lyon. That season's North American concert engagements included an appearance with Chicago's Music of the Baroque, recitals with the New York Festival of Song, and Mozart's Mass in C Minor with both the Atlanta and Madison Symphonies followed by her concert debuts with the Toronto Symphony and Festival de Lanaudière (Montréal).
In September 2006, Jane Archibald began a two-year engagement at the Vienna Staatsoper, performing Queen of the Night, Sophie (Der Rosenkavalier and Werther), Olympia, Musetta, Princesse Eudoxie (La Juive) and others. She has also sung Konstanze and Cleopatra (Giulio Cesare) at the Marseille Opera and Zerbinetta (Ariadne auf Naxos) and Queen of the night at the Geneva Opera.
Further plans include Adina (L’Elisir d’amore) at the Wiener Staatsoper, Angelica (Orlando Paladino) with Berlin Philharmonic Orchestra, Konstanze at the Teatro di San Carlo Naples, Adele (Die Fledermaus) at the Geneva Opera, Zerbinetta at the Deutsche Oper Berlin, Zerbinetta and Konstanze at the Munich Staatsoper, Cunégonde (Candide) at Vlaamse Opera, Cleopatra at the Opéra National de Paris and Sophie (Der Rosenkavalier) at the Teatro alla Scala.
Jane Archibald has been critically-acclaimed for her recordings of works by Vivaldi and Charpentier with the Aradia Ensemble for Naxos. A Canada Council grant recipient, it was recently announced that she was the 2006 winner of the Sylvia Gelber Foundation award for the most talented musician under 30.
