Bettina Walter - Stage/Costume Designer

Biography

A native of Ulm/Germany, Bettina Walter first studied sculpture at the Freie Kunstschule Nürtingen. Later she started studying costum design at the Academy of Arts in Berlin where she graduated with diploma.

First engagement as a firm costume designer at the Theater Basel/Intendant Baumbauer. Since 1990, she has been living in France and worked at numerous theatres and opera houses: Düsseldorf, Essen, Residenztheater Munich, Mannheim, Deutsches Schauspielhaus Hamburg, Teatro La Fenice Venice, Covent Garden London, Cologne Opera, Glyndebourne Festival Opera, Grand Theatre of Geneva, etc. At the Théâtre du Châtelet in Paris she created the costumes for LULU by Alban Berg, DER ROSENKAVALIER by Richard Strauss, PETER GRIMES by Benjamin Britten (stage director Adolf Dresen) as well as DUKE BLUEBEARD'S CASTLE by Bela Bartok (stage director Stéphane Braunschweig). At the Aalto-Theatre in Essen she designed the costumes for ARABELLA (stage director Adolf Dresen) and DER ROSENKAVALIER by Richard Strauss; for AMPHYTRION by Heinrich Kleist at the Avignon Festival, for Beethoven's FIDELIO at Deutsche Staatsoper Berlin (Daniel Barenboim conducting), for the world premiere of LA ROSA DE ARIADNA by Gualtiero Dazzi at Festival Musica in Strassburg as well as for LUCIA DI LAMMERMOOR by Gaetano Donizetti at Opéra du Rhin in Strassburg.

Since 1996, Bettina Walter has been working for different drama theatres, e.g. DAS KÄTHCHEN VON HEILBRONN at Residenztheater in Munich (an Anselm Weber production), BÉRÉNICE at Theater Neumarkt in Zürich and PHÄDRA at Théâtre de Gennevilliers (both times with the producer F.M. Pesenti). She created the costumes for PALESTRINA at the Royal Opera House Covent Garden in London, for FIDELIO at Teatro La Fenice in Venice, for RIGOLETTO, LOHENGRIN and DIE MEISTERSINGER VON NÜRNBERG at the Aalto-Theatre in Essen (Anselm Weber productions).

Since 1999, collaboration with the stage director Christof Loy (CARMEN/Cologne Opera, EUGEN ONEGIN/La Monnaie Brussels, IPHIGENIE EN AULIDE/ Glyndebourne Festival Opera, DON CARLO/Opéra du Rhin Strasbourg).

At Grand Theatre of Geneva, she designed the costumes for LADY MACBETH OF MTSENSK (producer Nicolas Brieger) , at the Summer Festival Salzburg for HAMLET (co-production with Staatstheater Stuttgart) and LA CLEMENZA DI TITO (stage director for both: Martin Kusej); EUGEN ONEGIN at Opéra du Rhin Strasbourg (stage director M.A. Marelli); KATJA KABANOVA by Janacek (stage director Anselm Weber), FAUST by Gounod (stage director Christof Loy) and TIEFLAND at Frankfurt Opera; ROSENKAVALIER at Aalto Theatre in Essen; MACBETH at Semperoper Dresden (stage director Philipp Himmelmann); LOHENGRIN (stage director Nikolaus Lehnhoff) at Festspielhaus Baden-Baden, with revival at Lyon Opera.

Future projects include amongst others: LOHENGRIN/La Scala Milan (co-production with Baden-Baden); SIMONE BOCCANEGRA/Frankfurt Opera; ARMIDA/Salzburg Festival; TIEFLAND/Wiener Volksoper (co-production with Frankfurt); JENUFA/Bayerische Staatsoper Munich (stage director Barbara Frey); and several theatre plays at different German and Swiss theatres as well as at Salzburg Festival (QUARTETT/stage director Barbara Frey).

Since March 2004, Bettina Walter is teaching Costume at the “École supérieure des arts décoratifs” in Strasbourg.
