Jorge Jara - Stage/Costume Designer

Biography

Born in Santiago de Chile, Jorge Jara completed his studies of architecture there. Since 1975, he is working as costume designer for film, drama and music theatre.

He created the costumes for e.g. Claus Peymann’s Leonce und Lena, Thomas Bernhardt’s Der Theatermacher, George Tabori’s Othello, Andrea Breth’s Nachtasyl and also for Jedermann at Salzburg Festival.

Also in the opera field, Jorge Jara is internationally in demand and works at opera houses such as Amsterdam, Brussels (recently for Don Pasquale, Lady Macbeth of Mtsensk, La Cenerentola, Cavalleria rusticana, I Pagliacci), Vienna, Leipzig, Dresden, Berlin, Bayreuth, Stuttgart, Zürich, Lyon, Barcelona, Tokyo and Sydney.

He designed the costumes for productions with Luc Bondy, Nikolaus Lehnhoff, Peter Mussbach, Guy Joosten and Pierre Audi. He collaborated with Nicolas Brieger for Rossini’s Il Barbiere di Siviglia (Brussels), Mozart’s Titus and Menotti’s Der Konsul (Volksoper Vienna), What next? and Von heute auf morgen at Deutsche Staatsoper Berlin; with Philippe Sireuil for a Mozart Cycle, Lulu in Liège, Les Liasisons dangereuses in Antwerp, La Bohème in Lyon as well as for L’Enfant et les Sortiglèges and L’Heure espagnole in Brussels. At Komische Oper Berlin he designed the costumes for Die lustige Witwe, for The Rake’s Progress at the Semperoper in Dresden, for the world premiere of Barabbas (producer Stein Winge) in Oslo, for Fidelio in Leipzig, Der Cornet (by Frank Martin)/ Mémoires d’une jeune fille triste (by Xavier Dayer) and Galileo (by Michael Jarrell) in Geneva, La Bohème and La Favorite at Zürich Opera House, Roméo et Juliette (producer Guy Joosten) at the Metropolitan Opera New York, Idomeneo at the Liceu Barcelona and at Hamburgische Staatsoper, Zauberflöte at Salzburg Festival, Die verkaufte Braut in Frankfurt, Otello in Hannover and La Bohème in Hamburg

His recent projects have been among others: La Bohème in Valencia; Pelléas et Mélisande at the Royal Opera Copenhagen and Giustino at Schwetzingen Festival. In summer 2007 he will design for Tosca at Bregenz Festival.
