Martin Zehetgruber - Stage/Costume Designer
Biography
Martin Zehetgruber studied at the Academy of Music and Performing Arts in Graz, main subject Set Design, and graduated with distinction. For his dissertation on WOYZECK by Georg Büchner, he received the "Award for special artistic performance" by the German Federal Minister of Science and Arts.
In the eighties, he appeared with "Installations" in free productions, but equally as a set designer of various theatre productions mainly in Austria, Italy, Slovenia and Switzerland.
In the nineties, he worked especially for the Staatstheater Stuttgart (e.g. CLEANSED, HERZOG THEODOR VON GOTHLAND, CLAVIGO, KING ARTHUR by Purcell, FIDELIO, AL GRAN SOLE CARICO D'AMORE by Luigi Nono, DIE GEZEICHNETEN, OTELLO). He is collaborating with producers like Hans Kresnik (e.g. PEER GYNT at Salzburg Festival), Andrea Breth (e.g. DON CARLOS at Burgtheater Vienna, EUGEN ONEGIN at Salzburg Festival), Stephan Kimmig and Jossi Wieler for theatres like Thalia Theater Hamburg, Deutsches Schauspielhaus Hamburg, Volksbühne Berlin, Kammerspiele München, Residenztheater München (WOYZECK), Zürich Opera House (SALOME with Martin Kusej with whom he works closely together, e.g. at the Salzburg Festival where he created the sets for HAMLET, DON GIOVANNI, KÖNIG OTTOKARS GLÜCK UND ENDE as well as for HÖLLENANGST), at Nederlandse Opera Amsterdam (LADY MACBETH OF MTSENSK and DIE GEZEICHNETEN) and Bavarian State Opera Munich (MACBETH).
In 1998 and 2000, Martin Zehetgruber was elected "Set designer of the year" in a survey with the critics by the magazine "Theater heute", and he received the "Nestroy” award in the years 2001, 2002, 2004 and 2006” for the "best sets”.
In 2001, he was appointed Professor of the division for Set Design at the State Academy of Fine Arts in Stuttgart. In 2008, he created the Theatre Tower, a special stage for the newly founded Theatre Academy in Ludwigsburg.
In preparation e.g.: LADY MACBETH OF MTSENSK at Opera Bastille in Paris, a co-production of SALOME with Teatro del Liceu Barcelona/La Monnaie in Brussels.
