Biography

Since his first engagements at Glyndebourne Festival, Opera North and English National Opera, the young British tenor Christopher Ventris rushed to international reputation as one of the leading interpreters of his repertoire.

Highlights of recent seasons include e.g. his most successful performances as Parsifal (role debut at Vlaamse Opera Antwerp, Vienna State Opera, San Francisco, Seattle, Santiago de Chile, Barcelona, Hamburg, Covent Garden London); Siegmund/Valkyrie (Cologne, Vienna State Opera, Teatro San Carlo Naples, Teatro La Fenice Venice); his role debut as Lohengrin (Bologna); Erik/The Flying Dutchman (Vlaamse Opera Antwerp, San Francisco); Max/Der Freischütz (Berlin, Cologne and for his debut at La Scala, Milan); Sergej/Lady Macbeth of Mtsensk (Geneva, Brussels, Madrid, Barcelona, London, Amsterdam, San Francisco, Buenos Aires); Stewa/Jenufa (Metropolitan Opera New York, Glyndebourne Festival, Vlaamse Opera Antwerp); Florestan/Fidelio (Washington); title role Peter Grimes (Liceu Barcelona, Zürich Opera House); Manolios/The Greek Passion by Martinu (Bregenz Festival, Covent Garden London); Lensky/Eugen Onegin (Vlaamse Opera Antwerp); Dimitri/Boris Godunov (Nederlandse Opera Amsterdam); Jenik/The bartered Bride (Covent Garden London); Jack/The Midsummer Marriage (Covent Garden London and as his debut at Bavarian State Opera Munich); Clemente/Venus and Adonis by Hans Werner Henze (American premiere at Santa Fé Festival); Offizier/Cardillac (Opéra Bastille Paris); Lohengrin (Dallas Opera, where he received the 2007 Maria Callas Debut Artist of the Year Award for his interpretation of this role).

In summer 2008, he sang Parsifal in the new acclaimed production of Stefan Herheim at the Bayreuth Festival.

His plans include among others: Parsifal (Vienna State Opera, Valencia); Lohengrin (Wagner Festival Wels); Siegmund/Walküre (Vienna State Opera and a new production at San Francisco Opera); Palestrina (Bavarian State Opera Munich); Peter Grimes (Washington Opera); Sergej/Lady Macbeth von Mzensk (Metropolitan Opera New York); role debuts of Tannhäuser in Seattle 2011 and of Siegfried/Siegfried at Bavarian State Opera 2012; concerts in Barcelona, Copenhagen and Vienna.
