Christof Loy - Director

Biography

Christof Loy studied music-theatre directing at the Folkwang Hochschule in his home town of Essen as well as philosophy, art history, and Italian philology in Munich.

He has been working as a freelance director for music-theatre and drama since 1990. His career started in Stuttgart with staging of, among others, Zauberflöte, Children of the Sun, Phaedra and Triumph of Love, in Freiburg Entführung aus dem Serail and Munich with Patrick Marber’s Hautnah at the Kammerspiele.

Since 1997, Christof Loy has been cooperating closely with the Deutsche Oper am Rhein Düsseldorf-Duisburg (for instance Manon, Don Carlos, Contes d’Hoffmann, a Monteverdi-Cycle, Les Troyens, La belle Hélène, Louise), the Bremen Theatre (Orphée, Damnation de Faust, Pique Dame), the Hamburg State Opera (Alcina, Turco in Italia), and since 1998 with the Théâtre de la Monnaie, Brussels (Le nozze di Figaro, Entführung aus dem Serail, Eugene Onegin, Rosenkavalier, Bohème). He is a regular guest at the Bavarian State Opera in Munich (Saul, Roberto Devereux, The Bassarids, Lucrezia Borgia) and the Frankfurt Opera (Entführung aus dem Serail, Faust, La clemenza di Tito, La finta semplice, Simon Boccanegra, Così fan tutte).

He has staged productions at the Glyndebourne Festival (Iphigénie en Aulide), the Salzburg Festival (Armida and Theodora), the Royal Opera House Covent Garden London (Ariadne auf Naxos, Lucia di Lammermoor, Lulu, Tristan und Isolde), the Gothenburg Opera (Arabella), at Royal Opera Copenhagen (Lucio Silla), at Vienna’s Theater an der Wien (Giulio Cesare, Intermezzo and Prinz von Homburg).

Christof Loy was awarded the “Musikpreis der Stadt Duisburg” in 2001, for his London staging of Ariadne auf Naxos he was nominated for the Laurence Olivier Award, and in 2003 and 2004 he was named Director of the Year by the critics of the periodical Opernwelt. In 2008, he was awarded with the “Faust”-Theaterpreis. In 2010, he was awarded with the Laurence Olivier Award for his London staging of Tristan und Isolde.

In the nearer future his opera engagements will take him to Geneva (Donna del Lago and Lustige Witwe), Aix-en-Provence (Alceste), Stockholm (Ballo in maschera), Amsterdam (Les Vêpres siciliennes), Salzburg Festival (Frau ohne Schatten) as well as Houston (Tristan und Isolde).

Christof Loy has been a Professor and Head of the Department of Stage Directing at the Hochschule für Musik und darstellende Kunst Frankfurt since 2006.
