Kristine Ciesinski - Soprano
Biography
According to the Münchner Abendzeitung, American soprano Kristine Ciesinski "has the formidable vocal and acting qualities of a great opera tragedian”.
Ms. Ciesinski's roles include portrayals of many of the great operatic heroines with which her career has become identified: Lady Macbeth of Mtsensk/ Katerina (La Scala Milan, Paris Opera Bastille, Frankfurt); Salome (Bayerische Staatsoper Munich, Semperoper Dresden, English National Opera London, Teatro Carlo Felice Genova, San Diego Opera, Bellas Artes in Mexico City and recently in Honolulu in her 15th production of this opera); Wozzeck/Marie (Frankfurt, Bonn, London/ENO, Hamburg State Opera, Buenos Aires/Teatro Colon); the double bill Bluebeard's Castle/Erwartung (Leipzig, Basel); Bluebeard's Castle also at the New National Theatre Tokyo and in a concert version with the City of Birmingham Orchestra under the baton of Simon Rattle; Verdi's Macbeth/Lady Macbeth (in Vichy with Teatr Wielki on tour, at ENO London and on their tour to Russia at Bolshoi Theater in Moscow and Marinsky Theater in St. Petersburg, as well as in the Bremen production which received the Bavarian Theatre Award); Medea(Freiburg and Catania); Catalani’s La Wally (Bremen); Prokofiev’s Fiery Angel (Nuremberg); Berlioz’ Les Troyens/Cassandra (Opera North and Welsh National Opera); Ring cycle/Gutrune, 3. Norne and Gerhilde in Donald Runnicles production at San Francisco Opera; Szymanowsky’s King Roger/Roxanne in Bremen directed by K. Zanussi and in the Peter Mussbach production in Stuttgart; Fidelio/ Leonore (Frankfurt); Katja Kabanova/title part (Düsseldorf).
Her Emilia Marty in Janacek's Makropulos Case was acclaimed at Glyndebourne Festival, Hamburg State Opera, La Monnaie Brussels and the Nederlandse Opera Amsterdam.
Further engagements have been Wozzeck/Marie at Hamburg State Opera and the Nederlandse Opera Amsterdam, the new role of Agaue in Henze’s The Bassarids for Netherlands Opera and Ariane et Barbe-Bleue/Ariane at Teatro Regio Torino.
Ms. Ciesinski has also starred in several interesting film projects, e.g.: Werner Schroeter's latest prize winning film Abfallproduktion der Liebe, the BBC drama-documentary film The secret life of Alban Berg, and in the film version of Peter Mussbach's Frankfurt production of Wozzeck (available on DVD).
Other principal roles which Ms. Ciesinski has performed include Medea (Freiburg and Catania); Catalani’s La Wally (Bremen); Prokofiev’s Fiery Angel (Nuremberg); Berlioz’ Les Troyens/Cassandra (Opera North and Welsh National Opera) and Sieglinde/Die Walküre in Warsaw.
Kristine Ciesinski often sings duet recitals with her sister, well known mezzo-soprano Katherine Ciesinski. She is married to the renowned British Wagnerian Bass-baritone, Norman Bailey.
